All of my journals contain a number of drawings made of people I encountered on the New York City subway. Most of the time they did not know I was drawing them. Sometimes they did and tolerated me. Only a few individuals over the years objected.

You will also notice intrusions of Arab script and graphics. These appear because the journals began at a time when I enrolled into the Middle East Department at Columbia University, and I was pumping up my Arabic language competency wherever and whenever I could.
